Kyoto Fall's Down

So David Suzuki says that "emissions should be cut 25 per cent below 1990 levels by 2020, and 80 per cent below 1990 levels by 2050" (More on Suzuki here.)

Eighty per cent? What are the plants going to breathe - you know plants need to CO2 to live, eh?

And this is based on the pretty weak science that CO2 has any affect on the global climate.

I'm with Alberta on this one, go slow until the science actually develops strong results. You know the scientific method of
creating hypotheses, testing them, releasing the findings in an unbiased manner.

Bonus Link: Now these guys are serious.

"We can't be breeding right now," says Les Knight. "It's obvious that the intentional creation of another [human being] by anyone anywhere can't be justified today."

Knight is the founder of the Voluntary Human Extinction Movement, an informal network of people dedicated to phasing out the human race in the interest of the health of the Earth. Knight, whose convictions led him to get a vasectomy in the 1970s, when he was 25, believes that the human race is inherently dangerous to the planet and inevitably creates an unsustainable situation.

Well at least we know the world will have less wackos in it over the next few decades, Thanks Les Knight!!

Ya gotta like a guy like this who voluntarily takes himself out of the gene pool.

And regarding Kyoto, how come nobody's excited about the oil industry figuring out how to pump pressurized CO2 into the ground to get oil out instead of water? Isn't that an intelligent use of CO2 or are they going to tell us that CO2 is bad for the ground, too?

We have to be very careful about pumping CO2 into the ground. Suppose something happened and it got out. All at the same time, at the same place.

If it happened near a city, people would suffocate in their own homes, on the street, and pretty much everywhere else.

...and that's the wrong link.

Here's a correction.

Kyoto is much more malignant than most can imagine. Since it's most outspoken supporters have likely never actually read the protocol, they will not be able to describe the glaring problems with this "environmental" program.

1) There are no actual measurements of CO2 in any country. A country's CO2 emmissions are calculated by using a set of rules in the Kyoto protocol. I am paraphrasing here but having a measurement of industrial output is assigned a number, having so many square kilometers of forest is also assigned a negative number. There is no actual scientific measurement of the emissions. Think about it, it would be practically impossible. Also, how would you measure? A reading on Baffin Island would be completely different from one in downtown Hamilton.

2) There is an arbitrary CO2 measurement baseline that we must 'strive' to attain by a certain year. In our case, we need to decrease our arbitrary emissions while (and this is my favourite) some other countries (we'll get to who these countries are in a bit) are allowed to increase their amount of pollution

3) Now enter the whole reason why this Protocol has entered into being. It is a UN protocol and as such, it is designed to remove wealth from countries that have it and give it to countries that don't. However, don't take my word for it - take a look at who makes the majority of the countries in the UN and every other "initiative" they have ever taken.

4) Since the polluting countries are not likely to be able to reduce their arbitrary pollution levels AND since poor countries are not likely to increase theirs, the Kyoto Protocol ALLOWS FOR A POLLUTING COUNTRY TO BUY A POOR COUNTRY'S RIGHT TO POLLUTE. Again, don't take my word for it, read the document!

5) So this initiative, which has been disguised as an "Environmental" movement, is largely just another Socialist program to leech money from those who happen to have it.

Kyoto has nothing to do with the environment. This is the main reason why the US did not sign it. The other is that China (of course) gets a bye from this protocol despite the fact it is the world's largest polluter.
